SkuVault Profitability Reporting

The critical business intelligence SkuVault doesn't provide. Know exactly which SKUs make money and which drain your profits.

The Problem: Flying Blind on Profitability

Without Profitability Reporting

What SkuVault Shows You

  • Cost per unit (in product catalog)
  • Quantity in stock
  • Weight and dimensions
  • Warehouse location
  • Selling price (separate Sales Report - manual download required)
  • Profit data (must generate and download Sales Report separately)

Requires manual report generation and data aggregation across multiple reports. You know WHAT'S in your warehouse and can manually calculate IF IT'S PROFITABLE (if you dig into the Sales Report).

What Our Profitability Reports Show

  • Cost per unit
  • Selling price per unit
  • Gross profit per SKU
  • Margin percentage
  • Total profit contribution
  • Margin tier ranking

You know WHICH SKUs make money and which to cut.

Real Example: The Hidden Problem

Scenario: Widget Sales Analysis

Without Profitability Data

"Widgets sold 500 units last month. Great seller! Stock them more."

❌ Decision: Increase orders

With Profitability Reports

"Widgets: 500 units × $2 cost = $1,000 COGS. Sold at $5 = $2,500 revenue. But gadgets (200 units × $1 cost) sold at $8 = easier $1,400 profit."

✓ Decision: Push gadgets, optimize widget pricing

Understanding Your Profitability Metrics

Profit Contribution

What it is: The total profit dollars earned by a single SKU. This is calculated as: (Selling Price − Cost Per Unit) × Quantity Sold.

Why it matters: Not all high-margin SKUs are equally profitable. A 50% margin product selling 2 units/month might contribute less profit than a 10% margin product selling 500 units/month.

Total Profit Contribution

What it is: The aggregate profit dollars earned by a group of SKUs (by category, warehouse, channel, or customer segment) or your entire business.

Why it matters: Identifies which product categories, locations, or sales channels drive the most absolute profit. Essential for resource allocation and strategic decisions.

Profit Margin %

What it is: The percentage of revenue retained as profit. Formula: (Profit ÷ Selling Price) × 100.

Why it matters: Shows the efficiency with which you convert sales into profit. 40% margin is effectively twice as efficient as 20% margin.

Loss Leaders & Unprofitable SKUs

What they are: SKUs with negative profit (selling price below cost) or margin below 0%.

Why it matters: Some may be strategic (loss leaders to drive customer acquisition), but most need repricing, discontinuation, or supplier negotiation.

Real Use Cases for Profitability Reports

🛍️ E-Commerce Seller

Situation: 2,000 SKUs across multiple channels (Amazon, Shopify, eBay). Need to know which products to promote and which to discontinue.
✓ Use profitability report to identify top 100 margin-driving SKUs to advertise, and bottom 100 to clearance.

📦 Wholesale Distributor

Situation: Customers demand volume discounts, which erodes margins. Need visibility into which products can sustain discounts.
✓ Use margin data to segment products into "bulk-friendly" (high margin tolerates discount) vs. "margin-sensitive" (cannot discount without going unprofitable).

🏭 Multi-Warehouse 3PL

Situation: Managing 5 warehouses with different profitability profiles. Need to optimize inventory allocation to maximize ROI.
✓ Use profitability report to prioritize warehouse space for high-margin SKUs and reduce space for low-margin items.

🏢 Enterprise Retail

Situation: CFO asks: "Is our inventory investment generating adequate returns?" No easy answer.
✓ Use margin analysis + turnover data to show profit per dollar of inventory investment. Present to board with confidence.
